First Grade
is studying songs with numbers. First they will learn a Canandian folk
song about sailing. Next, they will learn a Puerto Rican folk song
"Diez Perritos" which is a backwards counting song with rhyming
words. Then they will learn African American "Ten Little Angels in
the Band" and discuss instruments. Finally, they will create their
own version of the traditional carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas".
Second Grade
is also studying cultural music through the Reading Standards by identifying
rhyming
words and phrases and patterns in melodies using holiday songs around the world.
They are preparing Christmas Cookies and Holiday Hearts Musical for December.
Third Grade
will be studying the history of dance. They will learn court dances,
square dance, tap and jazz, and finally ballet. The culminating lesson
will focus on the "Nutcracker Ballet" by following simple
directions in completing a world map which will represent the musical treats
included in the second act of the ballet.
Fourth Grade are
going to study Native American folk tales and act it out with music and
song. Then they are going to study traditional holiday songs from
different cultures. They are also preparing to present a Veterans' Day
Concert with William Allen High School ROTC who will be presenting the flag.
Fifth Grade
is studying musical forms through the Math Standards. They are learning
about holiday celebrations around the world. And in Reading Standards they
will be discussing the meanings of the text in the songs.
Music students participate in
singing, playing, moving, creating, and listening during music class. They
are learning to read musical notation in both melody and rhythm. Also, the
students are presented with a variety of classical and popular selections as
they study different cultures and time periods.
