Earth Day Clean Up

On April 22, Dr. Hein, Ms. Kish and six other Dieruff students helped clean up the Environmental Park, known to students as the breezeway. Some students helped Ms. Kish clean out the waterfall gutter, so that when the water runs through it the leaves will not get stuck and form a damlike structure. Also two of the students were digging up the time capsules of trash that were buried along the walls seven years ago.

Dieruff Talent Show

The Class of 2008 sponsored a student talent show on Friday, April 18, in the Dieruff High School auditorium.  Acts included singing, dancing, and rapping.  Students reported that the auditorium was about three-quarters full, and class adviser Ms. Jillian Greuver guessed that they added more than $2,000 to the class fund.

A group called Fame danced their way to first place and a $100 prize that they split between the three members of the group. Other highlights included freshman rapper Diedre Sell who wore a sweatshirt that said “Queen of Rap.”  The show lasted almost three hours and many claimed that it was worth the five dollar admission charge.

Hosts for the evening were Gabriel Tejeda, Ismanuel DeJesus, and Kia Russ.  They kept the crowd enthused as they introduced the acts.  Judges for the events included teachers Mr. Ian Althouse, Mr. Thomas Derhammer, Ms. Purcell, Mrs. Jessica Harris.

Brian Basketball Fundraiser

To some students, Brian Hassler was just a custodian, but to many people throughout the Dieruff community he was known as a great man. On March 15, Dieruff held a fundraiser dedicated to Hassler and all donations went to his family. It was a fun-filled night that raised over $6,500.

The fundraiser consisted of two basketball games that were held in Dieruff’s gym. One was between the boys’ basketball team and male faculty and friends, and the other was between the girls’ basketball team and female adults. The idea of this fundraiser came from a joint effort between Mr. James Moniz, Tom Stoudt Sr., Tim Gieger, Bobbie Jo Gildner, Colleen Dymond, and Dave George who were all good friends with Brian. an.

Despite the fact that the admission was free, the fundraiser gained a lot of money through donations, selling t-shirts, and auctions. All the money raised went to the Hassler family. Many members of the family and close friends attended the fundraiser, including his wife, children, and mother.

The games went very well and everyone had a good time. The girls’ basketball team won the game; however, the male faculty members defeated the boys. Everyone who participated was a winner. “I loved how the entire Eastside community came together and showed their true Husky pride,” stated Mrs. Colleen Dymond.

Overall, there was a very big turnout. Many people loved the idea and were very happy to attend and give back. “We miss Brian. He was much more than a custodian; he was a friend and a good man. Brian will be missed for years to come,” stated Dymond.
