HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSES
For electives that have limited enrollment, priority will be given to upper classmen who need the course to meet graduation, academy or pathway requirements.
HEALTH EDUCATION
5 periods ½ Year 0.5 Unit Grade 9
Health Education provides an understanding of the human body systems and substance abuse with an emphasis on human sexuality. The curriculum explores positive daily life skills that include wellness, nutrition, first aid and community health.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
5 Periods ½ Year 0.2 Unit Grade 9, 10, 11, 12 4 Periods ½ Year 0.2 Unit Grade 9,
10, 11, 12 3 Periods 1 Year 0.2 Unit Grade 10, 11, 12
Physical Education is required for graduation and includes instruction in lifetime sports, physical fitness and conditioning, rhythmic movement, aquatics and adaptive physical education. Students will be expected to wear, for health and safety reasons, the Allentown School District approved physical education uniform.
THE WORLD OF HEALTH
5 Periods ½ Year 0.5 Unit Grade 10
The World of Health will take a close look at health care organizations of the international, federal, state and local levels and how they affect current health care problems. The health care system will be broken down into sources of health care, health care practitioners, alternative practitioners, and types of healthcare facilities. Students interested in the Health Science Academy are encouraged to take this course.
FITNESS
5 Periods ½ Year 0.5 Unit Grade 10
Fitness is designed to help the student understand and identify the significance of participation in a lifetime fitness and nutrition program. The physical and emotional benefits of participation in lifetime fitness activities will be stressed. The student will understand the relationship of blood pressure and heart rate to training activities. Students interested in the Health Science Academy are encouraged to take this course.
