The Lock–In
by Mariha
With weeks of anticipation the day finally arrived, and on March 14th at 9pm, the doors opened and the fun began. The Lock-In was an event hosted by the Student Government Association (SGA), in which students were locked in the school gym. Throughout the night they could participate in various activates including basketball, Frisbee, soccer, watching movies in the remedial gym, and, between 3am and 5am, swimming in the natatorium. The night started off with an up-beat DJ (McCluskey) performance and students dancing on the floor. For those that weren’t interested in open gym or busting a move on the dance floor, they had a place in the remedial gym which throughout the night showed hits such as Wedding Crashers, Saw, and The Simpsons Movie. Woody’s pizza was served all night along with a variety of drinks. Then at two pm Karaoke begins, and the brave souls who volunteered their voices really seemed to enjoy themselves. Then after that performance the real fun began with the opening of the swimming pool. Swim team members and a few others performed on the diving board while other people swam in the other pool, which was cold, or watched near the edge. Though if you did you were sure to get splashed, poor girls who thought they could get in the pool without getting their hair wet!
Some individuals could not last all night and landed themselves to a peaceful sleep on the bleachers or in the movie room, some even brought air mattress. Then in the morning around seven we were greeted with a breakfast of donuts and beagles, checking out to go home and sleep in our real beds, tried out from an entertaining night. SGA would like to thank everyone for a successful Lock-In, especially the faculty that chaperoned, the DJ, the security guards, Sponsors, and of course the Lock-In committee who helped put this together consisting of : Stacey, Tom, Lille, Amanda, Sarah, Falynn, Jake, Ahmad, Josh, and the head of the committee, Megan. And for the lower classman who didn’t have a chance to participate in this wonderful event, there is always next year… that is unless you’re a freshman.
Senior Spotlight: Carlos
by Mackenzie
Our senior class treasurer is active in more than just planning this year’s senior prom; he is also involved in National Honor Society, and dances in our very own Dance Academy. Aside from these clubs and activities, Carlos also volunteers at Emerging Health Professionals where he is the treasurer.
Carlos keeps his daily schedule booked by taking Early Bird Dance, Dance Academy, Government and Economy. From Economy, Carlos travels to Penn State on Tuesdays and Thursdays to a lecture on Physiology and a lab in Embryonic Hearts of a chicken and the Effects of certain drugs. On Mondays and Wednesdays he attends English courses at LCCC. Finally, on Fridays, Carlos can usually be found at the 17th Street hospital, learning Health Care and skills like CPR and First Aid, or even shadowing doctors. After high school, Carlos will attend Penn State main to double major in Immunology and Botany, where he plans to become an Herbalist.
Recently, Carlos made his debut on the stage in the annual Dance Academy Concert. As one half of the male population in the show, Carlos was involved in eleven pieces. “I was very excited to be a senior, but I fear of what’s going to happen.” Unlike popular belief, much time went into the preparation for the Dance concert. “I never imagined how much work went into the concert. When I used to watch it, I would say, ‘that looks so easy,’ then we are doing it right.”
Carlos’s next and possibly final project is planning this year’s senior prom alongside of Alaura and Allyssa, which will be on May 24, so mark your calendars, Seniors!
Senior Spotlight: Mollie
by Amanda
Mollie is an excellent addition to a list of outstanding seniors featured in our section of the Canary. Before even being aware of the long list of accomplishments and honors, fellow classmates describe her as the “most talented person” they know. She is a tremendous addition to Allen’s student body and the Arts Academy.
Mollie is involved in a lot here at Allen. Mollie’s schedule has an array of challenging courses, such as AP Biology, AP Economics, and AP Government. Molly also participates in the Theatre Academy and takes Spanish IV. A’s and B’s are maintained in all of her classes and she will continue her education in college to become a Theatre or English teacher. Molly’s extra-curricular activities include president of the Drama Club, as well as, maintaining the position of CEO of the William Allen Construction Company (WACC). In addition, she participates in Chorale, Theatre, and William Allen’s National Honor Society.
The arts, both in and out of school, have been a big part of Mollie’s life for a long time now. She explains that she has always had a desire to perform, but did not have “enough courage” to try until 8th grade. Since then, it has been true love. “Now I can’t imagine who I’d be or what I would do without the arts,” said Mollie about her passion for theater. Her favorite role to date was playing ‘Charity’ in Allen’s 2007 musical, Sweet Charity. She describes it as being very difficult and exhausting to prepare for, but extremely worthwhile. Her role in this year’s musical, Gypsy is ‘Louise’. This character eventually becomes “Gypsy” Rose Lee, the woman who perfected the art of the stripe tease without ever revealing herself! Gypsy is scheduled for April 24th, 25th, and 26th in William Allen’s auditorium. Gypsy is sure to be an excellent show that everyone should see. This will be Mollie’s last major show here at Allen and she says that she will definitely miss the sense of family. “I’ve worked with these people for so long, and we’ve been through so much. It will be hard to say goodbye.”
