Trexler Middle
School’s new cafeteria opened November 13,
marking the first new kitchen the Allentown
School District has installed in over 20 years.
Over 1,000 students reveled in the array of
choices presented to them as they deliberated
over which of three state-of-the-art serving
areas to go to for their meals. For this
celebration, each station offers a unique food
angle (while meeting child nutrition
regulations):
* Big Daddy
Pizza was a whole grain hearty pizza offering
from Schwan’s Food Service Inc. out of
Minnesota. This pizza provided students with a
healthy, flavorful treat.
* The hot
sandwiches lunch line offered the students with
their favorite hot sandwiches daily;
cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and breaded chicken
sandwiches. All the sandwiches are prepared on
whole grain buns.
* The
traditional buffet provided a variety of hot
lunches buffet style. The buffet offered menu
items such as nachos, chicken nuggets, breakfast
for lunch (a favorite), oven baked chicken and
meatloaf.
Lunch was
served from 10:30am to 1pm, and the Trexler
Bulldog, the Dieruff Husky and some other big
dogs from Administration joined in the
celebration. “Our team was so excited to see the
children’s exclamations at the hot food
offerings,” said Pamela Gallagher, Director of
Child Nutrition Services. “This will make a big
difference in their quality of life during
school hours each day.”
