Public School Choice and Tutoring under NCLB
Public School Choice an Option under No Child Left Behind for Elementary Students attending Central, Jefferson, Sheridan, and Union Terrace Elementary Schools

As Allentown School District begins another school year, we do so wishing you and your children a happy, safe and rewarding year filled with strong academic achievement.

By law, the Allentown School District is required to notify parents that they have the option of School Choice when their child’s school is in improvement status.  School Choice means that you may choose to send your child to another public school in the Allentown School District.  No surrounding district is able to assist us in offering School Choice for ASD middle or high school students and this option is not available within the district. ASD has already begun a facilities plan to renovate and expand our middle schools in an attempt to address overcrowding.  Elementary school choices are limited to schools that have not been identified for School Improvement, which are listed on the chart below.

If you are considering transferring your child to another elementary school, please complete an application and return it to your child’s principal by September 28, 2009.
SCHOOL CHOICE APPLICATION FORM

The following chart lists the schools projected to be options for school choice and their PSSA results.  Students attending Central, Jefferson, Sheridan, or Union Terrace Elementary Schools may request a transfer to these schools:

Free Tutoring Services Available for Students Attending Jefferson, Sheridan, and Union Terrace Elementary Schools, Harrison Morton, Raub, and Trexler Middle Schools, Louis E. Dieruff and William Allen High Schools.

By law, the Allentown School District is required to notify parents that they have the option of free tutoring (Supplemental Educational Services) when their child’s school is in improvement status for two or more years.  We encourage you to take advantage of the free tutoring services.  Please click on the link below to see a list of tutoring providers approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to provide tutoring services in the Allentown School District.
