Karen S. Angello, Ph.D.
In August 2002, Karen S. Angello, Ph.D., was named
the 15th superintendent of Allentown School District.
Prior to her appointment, her experience includes
serving as a superintendent of urban districts in Massachusetts and
South Carolina and a School Administrative Unite representing one
city and two rural districts in New Hampshire. She had worked in
districts ranging from 2,400 students to 32,000 students.
Earlier in her career, Dr. Angello held supervisory positions in
staff development, strategic planning, Title I, research and
evaluation, special education in Colorado and Montana. She
also holds the distinction of being selected to participate in the
Third Annual Congress for Exemplary Superintendents.
Most recently, she served as an educational
consultant, focusing on accountability for school and district
performance and special education. She has provided extensive
consulting services to the Massachusetts Department of Education
Accountability and Targeted Assistance and Program Quality Assurance
Services, conducted educational audits throughout the country, and
served as lead evaluator of the State Improvement Grant in special
education for the Illinois State Board of Education. Dr.
Angello also served as the lead consultant for a consortium of
consultants to develop an accountability framework for evaluating
public school districts in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This
work was done for the Office of Educational Quality and
Accountability, an independent educational auditing office
established by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Dr. Angello began her teaching experience in
Billings, Montana. She has been an elementary teacher and special
education teacher in the areas of emotionally disturbed and learning
disabilities. Dr. Angello served in many roles in Colorado Springs
School District 11, a district of 32,000 students. During her
eighteen years in Colorado Springs, she served as a teacher, Title I
Supervisor, Staff Development Supervisor, Research and Evaluation
Specialist, and internal Coordinator of Strategic Planning. She
completed elementary administration experience as an intern in the
Boulder, Colorado Public Schools while attending the University of
Colorado to complete her Ph.D.
Published in the change process in strategic
planning, Dr. Angello had developed and field-tested a special
education audit process that interfaces compliance with
effectiveness standards. She holds a Ph.D. degree in
Educational Administration, Curriculum and Supervision from the
University of Colorado in Boulder; a M.A. degree in Special Education
from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley; and a B.S.
degree in Elementary Education from Montana State University in
Bozeman.
