Superintendent's Message: 2018-2019 District Loan Information

letterhead

May 7, 2019

Dear ASD Community,

At tonight’s Board of School Directors special meeting, the decision made to take the loan will impact our district financially.  However, not making this decision would have an even more grave impact on our ability to educate our children.   I applaud those who supported the decision, and even those who opposed yet still spoke as advocates of our district and our children.

The reality is that we are working hard to address long standing fiscal deficiencies in the District and this work will continue to be challenging in the near future.   Based on the PFM Fiscal Analysis conducted in 2018, our district was projected to end this school year with a $28M deficit and a $65M deficit for 2019-2020.  Instead, with the difficult decision made this evening, ASD is projected to avoid a deficit at the end of this fiscal year, and drastically reduce the projected deficit for the 2019-2020 school year.

Please know this is not the end of our challenges.  We must now focus on the 2019-2020 budget process.  A word of caution, this process will also require difficult decisions be made as our District continues to face a structural deficit. While we still have work to do to improve our stewardship of District resources, we as a community must continue to advocate on behalf of the students, families and staff within ASD. We remain committed to excellence.

Sincerely,

Thomas E. Parker
Superintendent, Allentown School District
