COVID-19 Resources for Special Education Families

ASD ESY 2020 is a 4-week program that will run July 6- 24, Monday - Friday utilizing the virtual Unique Curriculum. 369 students qualify for ESY and will be individually invited to participate through their current teachers.

ESY will support students with:

MDS (Multiple Disabilities Support)
AS (Autistic Support)
LSS (Life Skills Support)
ES ( Emotional Support Support)
SITES (School Based Partial Hospitalization)

The inclusion of students who have IEP’s but may not qualify for ESY will be a priority at every ASD school.

Dear Families,

Beginning Monday, March 30, 2020, the Allentown School District is committed to making a good faith effort to provide continuity of education, planned instruction, appropriate, and reasonable services for students while our schools are closed due to COVID-19.

During the extended closure, all educational services will be provided via remote methods to protect the health and safety of students and those individuals providing education, specialized instruction, and related services. The District will provide all instruction, including special education and related services through on-line resources, instruction on digital platforms, and low tech options such as exchange of curriculum-based resources, instructional packets, projects, and written assignments.

If your child has special needs (IEP, 504, gifted), your child’s case manager will be contacting you to discuss various ways in which your child’s services may be delivered that are flexible, meaningful, reasonable, and appropriate. Special Education Teachers will be collaborating with Regular Education teachers to provide modifications and accommodations for students with IEP's who are receiving Regular Education programming.

The District understands the challenges presented by the school closure and other current health-related limitations that have been placed on all of us. We also understand the additional role that has been thrust upon families during this time. The goals of the online program are to continue the academic and social growth of our students and establish a level of normalcy to their education.

If you have any questions regarding your child’s continuity of education, please contact your child’s case manager so that we can work collaboratively for the benefit of your child. Teachers will be checking email frequently while having office hours daily. If an IEP meeting was postponed due to school closure, or you have an upcoming IEP meeting, you will be contacted to schedule a virtual meeting in the very near future.

El Distrito Escolar de Allentown se compromete de buena fe a proveer continuidad en la educación, instrucción planificada, apropiada y servicios razonables para los estudiantes durante el cierre de escuelas debido al COVID-19, a partir del 30 de marzo de 2020.

Durante el cierre prolongado, todos los servicios educativos serán provistos por medio de métodos de aprendizaje a larga distancia, para proteger la salud y la seguridad de las personas que proveen la educación, instrucción especializada y los servicios relacionados. Si su hijo tiene necesidades especiales (IEP (PEI, por sus siglas en inglés), 504, estudiante dotado y talentoso), el coordinador de los servicios de su hijo se comunicará con usted para discutir las diversas formas mediante las cuales se le pueden ofrecer los servicios en una manera flexible, valiosa, razonable y apropiada. Los maestros de Educación Especial colaborarán con los maestros de Educación Regular para proveer las modificaciones y acomodos a los estudiantes con IEPs, los cuales reciben programación de Educación Regular.

El Distrito entiende los retos que presenta el cierre prolongado de las escuelas y otras limitaciones actuales relacionadas con la salud, que se nos han impuesto. También entendemos el rol adicional que se le ha encomendado a las familias en este momento. Las metas del programa en línea abarcan el continuar desarrollando el crecimiento académico y social de nuestros estudiantes y establecer un nivel de normalidad en su educación.

Si tiene alguna pregunta relacionada con la continuidad en la educación de su hijo, comuníquese con el coordinador de los servicios de su hijo para trabajar en conjunto por el bienestar de su hijo. Los maestros revisarán sus correos electrónicos frecuentemente, mientras mantienen horas diarias de oficina. Si se pospuso una reunión de IEP debido al cierre prolongado de las escuelas, o si tiene una reunión de IEP próximamente, se comunicarán con usted para calendarizar una reunión virtual en un futuro muy cercano.
