ASD & CSC Named November Head Start Heroes
Posted on 11/19/2020
There’s exciting news in Allentown! The National Head Start Association has named Thomas Parker, superintendent of the Allentown School District (ASD), and Paula Margraf, CEO/President of Community Services for Children (CSC), as Head Start Heroes for the month of November!

ASD is committed to increasing pre-K exposure and kindergarten readiness in our city, as outlined in our Strategic Framework. Thanks to the dynamic partnership between the district and CSC, the past two years have seen incredible progress towards both of these goals.

In September 2018, ASD supported the opening of the Learning Hub in downtown Allentown—just a few blocks from Central Elementary. The Learning Hub supports the rapid demand for high-quality early learning in Allentown, providing six classroom spaces.

As a part of the American Association of School Administrators’ Early Learning Cohort Collaboration Demonstration Project, the partnership between ASD and CSC strengthened with the expansion of Kindergarten Jumpstart Centers in two elementary schools. These centers are hubs where families can find resources and support as they prepare to transition their students to kindergarten.

Most recently, CSC opened the Neighborhood Resource Center, an expansion of the Learning Hub. The new space hosts two new Head Start classrooms and a Jumpstart Center, similar to what is already available ASD buildings for families who are ready to enroll and register for kindergarten. The  Early Learning Resource Center will work with families to connect them to resources in the community for pre-K.

Finally, Healthy Start of Valley Health Partners will be a space for a community health worker and health education services. The goal of the Neighborhood Resource Center is to bring a multitude of services under one roof in an area of the city where families need it most. You can learn more about the Neighborhood Resource Center in this video.

Congratulations to Superintendent Parker & Ms. Margraf for their recognition as National Head Start Heroes!
