I know that the topic of immigration has been weighing heavily on many of our minds in recent weeks. The conversations happening in our community, in the news, and even at the highest levels of government can be unsettling.
I want to assure you that the Allentown School District is committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all our students and their families, regardless of their immigration status. We understand that this uncertainty can be particularly stressful for members of our Learning Community.
Our intention this evening was for a resolution to be introduced by the School Board that would formalize protocols to ensure the safety and rights of all students are protected in the event of changes to immigration-related policies. However, recent executive orders issued by the new administration within the past 48 hours necessitate a re-evaluation of our approach.
- We have been governed by certain laws and policies for decades and some of those laws and practices are being changed dramatically in real time.
- We are working closely with our legal team to thoughtfully review each change and determine responses that will be in the best interest of our Learning Community.
- While events may be moving quickly, it is in the best interests of all involved that we do not rush but carefully comply with the law and the humanistic element of change.
We already have policies that protect young people from all backgrounds in Allentown School District.
- The Allentown School District’s Board of Directors passed a “Welcoming Schools Resolution” back in 2019, pledging to keep students safe no matter their immigration status.
- This reinforces “Policy 200” which states, “in compliance with the law, the District shall not inquire about the immigration status of a student as part of the enrollment process.”
We have been working closely with our legal counsel to ensure that we comply with the new executive orders and provide new guidance so that everyone understands their rights and is equipped with the tools to handle the presence of non-local law enforcement on District property.
With changes being made to Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Orders on an almost daily basis, other matters may also be added within the next few days.
I want our families and staff to know that we remain committed to providing you with adequate information and will refer families to services that may be able to assist them.
We also want to create conditions that everyone within our District feel safe, valued, empowered, and loved.
We will continue to provide our staff, students and families with resources and guidance when available and appropriate. I am honored to serve as your Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer.
