
Allentown, PA – May 22, 2025– At its Regular Board Meeting held on Thursday, May 22, 2025 the Allentown School District School Board of Directors approved the appointment of five new team members whose roles align with the District’s Strategic Plan and long-term vision for innovation and creation of pathways for tomorrow. These new leaders will support the implementation of key initiatives designed to improve student outcomes, enhance technology integration, and strengthen leadership capacity across the district.
“These appointments reflect our deep commitment to building capacity across the district and in alignment with the priorities of our Strategic Plan,” said Dr. Carol D. Birks, Superintendent of the Allentown School District. “Each of these professionals will help move the district forward and ensure that all students have access to a high-quality, future-ready education.”
Kyle Kauffman has been named Director of Innovation and Instructional Technology. A veteran leader in STEM education and digital learning, Mr. Kauffman has played a central role in the District’s curriculum modernization and AI policy development since joining the District in 2022. Kauffman is a part of AASA’s National Innovative Leadership Academy (NILA) and the 2024-2025 Innovation for Transformation Cohort. He co-leads the District’s Google Ambassadors Program. In this new position, he will lead the district-wide vision for educational technology, ensuring alignment with the Strategic Plan’s call for innovative, future-ready learning environments. He will continue to guide the implementation of the District’s comprehensive AI Guidance.
Melissa Routson and Megan Roberts have been appointed Supervisors of Instructional Technology. Both leaders bring extensive experience in education and technology. Dr. Routson, formerly of Building 21, has helped lead the school’s shift to AI-enhanced instruction and data-driven learning systems. Dr. Roberts has been instrumental in supporting tech integration at the elementary level as a technology lead and fourth-grade teacher at Ramos Elementary School. Their roles will be essential in advancing the district’s strategic focus on education opportunity, digital literacy, and professional learning. Together, the team of Supervisors of Instructional Technology will directly provide administrative supervision of the school-level instructional coaches and student tech teams at the schools that have been selected to participate in our partnership with Verizon Innovative Learning Schools to support teachers in effectively integrating technology into learning.
Austin Renzi will join the leadership team as the second Assistant Principal at Roosevelt Elementary School. Mr. Renzi brings strong instructional leadership experience as a Math teacher and Instructional Coach at Trexler Middle School, where he helped implement restorative practices, supported professional development, and helped build a culture of academic achievement. His leadership style is focused on cultivating strong school relationships that foster safe, inclusive, and high-performing learning environments.
These individuals will start in their new roles in the coming weeks.
