Allentown, PA - (June 5, 2025) - Allentown School District’s commitment to educational opportunity and future-ready learning just took a major step forward. Today, the District celebrated the launch of the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program at five of its schools, Building 21 High School, Harrison Morton Middle School, Raub Middle School, South Mountain Middle School, and Trexler Middle School, joining a national movement to close the digital divide and reimagine what is possible in the classroom. As part of the partnership, every student and educator in the participating schools will receive a personal tablet with free 24/7 internet access, along with dedicated technology professional development to support meaningful, tech-enabled learning at school and at home.

“Access to technology is a necessity for 21st-century learning,” said Dr. Carol D. Birks, CEO and Superintendent of Allentown School District. “We are incredibly proud to be selected to partner with Digital Promise and Verizon Innovative Learning Schools. With this partnership, we are unlocking new opportunities for engagement, creativity, and achievement. Commencing the fall of the 2025-2026 academic year, our teachers will be empowered with new tools and support, and our students will have greater access to a world of learning that extends far beyond the classroom.”

Research shows 59% of U.S. parents with lower incomes said their child may face digital obstacles in completing schoolwork, highlighting the urgency of addressing the "homework gap" that disproportionately affects low-income and minority communities. This year, the program will provide more than 3,700 students and 400 faculty and staff with tablets and year-round connectivity, ensuring learning can continue both in the classroom and at home, opening doors to endless opportunities and empowering every student to reach their full potential. Each year, an additional cohort of students will benefit from the program.

Beyond providing free technology and internet access, Verizon Innovative Learning is committed to transforming education by offering extensive teacher training and support. This empowers educators to seamlessly harness the power of technology in their teaching, making learning more engaging and deepening students’ understanding of subjects. By investing in both technology and teachers, we’re creating more dynamic classrooms and leveling the playing field for all.

“Becoming a Verizon Innovative Learning School is a game-changer for our school community. With every student receiving a tablet, we are removing barriers to digital access and empowering our learners with the tools they need to thrive in a connected world,” said Dr. Melissa Rouston, a former Building 21 teacher who will move into the role of Supervisor of Instructional Technology, supporting the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools. This program supports our mission to inspire innovation, equity, and excellence in every classroom.”

The kickoff event brought together students, teachers, district leadership, families, and community partners to celebrate the start of a new era for digital learning in Allentown. Each participating school also hosted individual celebrations, marking the beginning of a tech-forward future for their students.

Dr. Birks added, “This isn’t just an investment in technology, it’s an investment in our children, our teachers, and the future of Allentown. It’s about ensuring every student, no matter their ZIP code, has what they need to thrive.”

This initiative aligns with Allentown School District’s broader commitment to innovative learning environments and equitable access to opportunity, as outlined in the District’s strategic plan, Lighting the Way: A Blueprint for Innovation and Excellence 2030.
