Broadway Veteran to Perform with Allentown Children’s Chorus at St. John’s Church
Posted on 11/28/2018

In July, Lynnie Godfrey returned to where it all began: New York City, singing the songs that launched her career. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the groundbreaking, Tony-nominated musical, Eubie!, she joined fellow members of the original Broadway cast at Feinstein’s/54 Below for an evening of celebration in song.

Now, Lehigh Valley’s own Broadway veteran is performing another special evening: “Come Spend the Holidays with Lynnie Godfrey and the ACC” is slated for one night only at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 37 S 5th Street.  The show begins at 7:30pm. Tickets are available at the door and range from $5-$20. Godfrey is donating a portion of the proceeds to St. John’s.

In addition to singing favorite Christmas songs, Lynnie will be introducing some very special guests – members of her beloved 15-member Allentown Children’s Chorus, which she launched earlier this year to give children an opportunity – free of charge – to perform in a professional setting.

Damaris Nieves’ nine-year-old daughter Jaynalis is a member of the chorus. He says from the formal acceptance letter to rehearsals with Godfrey and professional musicians, it has been a once in a lifetime learning experience.

“Our daughter attends a charter school that does not offer chorus, so this is a complete benefit for her,” he said. “She has learned the importance of saying words correcting – how this can make music sound better. And being part of Lynnie’s concert makes her feel important!”

Godfrey says the children auditioned and started rehearsing in February. She created the chorus after recognizing a need in Allentown. It is funded through 21st Century Community Learning Centers, a federal grant program that helps communities provide enrichment activities, particularly for students in high-poverty areas.

Members of the chorus come from a number of ASD schools including Lehigh Parkway, Union Terrace, Mosser, Jefferson, Muhlenberg Elementary and Harrison Morton Middle School.

“I grew up in Harlem. My parents worked two jobs and wanted more for their daughter,” Godfrey explains. “I want to give back to those same families. Music is everything to me and I hope to instill that same love in these talented children.”

Godfrey, who has performed around the world, appearing on stage, television and film, says the children have been working hard and will perform in seven musical numbers during the one-hour concert.

“The holidays are a magical time of year,” Godfrey explains. “I’m honored to perform these cherished songs, in a gorgeous church with the Allentown Children’s Chorus. Bring the family for a beautiful night – we promise this concert will be your favorite gift this season!”
