Allentown School District and the City of Allentown Unite for Community Forum on Safety
Posted on 09/28/2023

The Allentown School District, in partnership with the City of Allentown, is inviting families, staff, students, and community-based organizations to a Community Forum on School Safety.

The meeting will occur on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at William Allen High School, 106 N 17th St, Allentown, PA 18102.

One of the key objectives of the forum is to provide an update on the comprehensive safety strategies and measures that are in place through the partnership between the District, the City, and the Allentown Police Department. Even with complex safety measures in place, the District is continuously exploring new resources and technologies to support and maintain a safe and secure environment conducive to learning and teaching for staff, students, and the broader community.

The District distributed a survey to families, students, and staff to enlist their input regarding school safety and explore the possibility of installing weapons detection systems. They encourage everyone to provide feedback on the survey.

“The Allentown School District is committed to creating an environment where all members of our learning community feel safe, valued, empowered, and loved,” said Dr. Carol D. Birks, Superintendent. “However, it will  take the collective commitment and support from all stakeholders to keep safety at the forefront and keep violence and weapons out of our schools.”

Mayor Tuerk reinforced his administration's commitment to a safer, cleaner, and healthier Allentown, stating, "District officials reached out to me this week following the incident on Monday. My team met with ASD for a highly productive meeting, where we collaborated to develop a plan of action that underscores the City and the district's shared commitment to the safety and well-being of Allentown's young people.”

We encourage families and community members to participate in the upcoming Community Forum on School Safety. Let us know if you plan to attend using this survey: https://forms.gle/VeDxehsQkSAaF6ZF8
