Diversity is a Strength. “We get better together. All of our strengths are needed.” In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Allentown School District and the Allentown School District Foundation are proud to sponsor the Hispanic Heritage Month Arts and Letters Contest that recognizes and celebrates Hispanic Heritage in our community. It encourages us to reflect on all of the contributions that the Hispanic community has made in the past and will continue to make in the future.
Contest Guidelines
- Students will create a painting/drawing, or write an essay or poem that highlights and celebrates Hispanic Culture. Bilingual submissions are encouraged for essays and poems. Art, essays and poetry will be completed outside of the academic day. All students are encouraged to participate.
- Essays and Poems should describe experiences with Hispanic Heritage, such as cultural traditions and/or celebrations.
- Art submissions should depict experiences with Hispanic Heritage, which can feature cultural traditions or celebrations. One submission will also be chosen as the imagery for the 2024 Celebration.
Judging Criteria
There will be three categories: essays, poems and art.Submissions for each category will compete in the following age groups: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12. Submissions will be judged on the following criteria:
- Artwork: Originality/Creativity, Technical Skill and Interpretation of Topic.
- Essays and Poems: Technical Skill, Voice and Strength of Idea.
- Each student must provide a cover sheet with their full name, student ID, school, grade and homeroom or art teacher name with their submission.

Kick Off - Thursday, September 21, 2023
Submission Deadline - Friday, October 13, 2023
**All poetry and essay submissions should be emailed to the Allentown School District Foundation at [email protected] or brought to the Central Administration office building located at 31 Penn St., Allentown, PA, 18102. Artwork should be brought to the Central Administration Building. Submissions may also be submitted to the main office at the student’s home school, which will be forwarded to the Foundation.
Winner Announcement - Tuesday, October 24, 2023
Recognition - Monday, October 30, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.at the Allentown School District Central Administration Office in the School Board Room, 31 S. Penn St., Allentown, Pa. 18102.
